Adopting a pet can open up a whole new world for animal lovers in terms of caring for a specific pet and also giving back to a community beyond the pet lovers world.  Many therapy dogs get their start as foster pets or rescues from an animal shelter.  You should check your state for specific requirements for designating your dog as a Good Citizen Dog or Therapy Dog, but at the heart of every therapy dog there is a loved and well trained pet.  There are always new things to discover about your specific pet or breed and wonderful insights or pet training tips that make pet ownership and interaction more enjoyable or exciting.  Please share your discoveries with us and we hope you'll check this page to learn new pet tidbits.

Dogs and Squeaky Toys: What's the Deal and Why Do They Like Them So Much?

One of the things that we have discovered is that you do not have to spend a fortune on dog toys to amuse your pet.  A funny thing about pets is that spending can get out of hand much the same way it can with a first baby. Nothing is too expensive or special for your pet and before you know it you are paying the monthly equivalent of a mortgage before you realize what you have done. Before you get to that point, we do think that keeping your pet stimulated is important, but it need not cost a fortune and if you have to start somewhere start with an affordable squeaky dog toy.  Admittedly, dogs can have mixed reactions, but we find that that could be the case with alot of toys.  Dog can immediately get into play mode as they do with other dogs. They can bat the toy around for a good while like prey. Chew it over a long period. Chew it up very quickly.  Ignore it. So, one of the points here is to not start out too expensive before you figure out what your specific pet likes. There are chew toys, furry toys, rope toys, rubber toys and many others. You may want to select some toys based on the size, breed, temperament and age of your pet.  And if you've sorted through that and want to start with one type of toy, we like a small squeaker ball.  They are not too expensive, not so easy to rip to shreds and we find that many dogs are just fascinated with the squeaker toys for reasons based on instinct more than anything else. We were very curious because the reaction can be so endearing and exciting to the pet owner that we decided to explore what a squeaker toy has that other toys might not have in terms of appeal.

It isn't the appearance in particular, it's the noise. Admittedly, it could get old for you like a young child's first drum set, but you just cannot deprive yourself or your pet of what could be SO MUCH fun.  This part may not sound too appealing, but dogs find certain toys fun because they remind them of prey.  The squeaker pet toy has particular appeal because the high pitched sound that most squeaker toys have sounds like a small animal just before it's dying. Ok, that part doesn't sound so nice and we don't like the idea of any animal dying that way, but we do not think a squeaker toy will turn Fido into a killer.  But dogs do need stimulation. Arousing a hunting dog's desire to hunt in an acceptable way will keep your pet happy and might actually stop him or her from tearing up your yard in a way that does not work for you.  The squeaker toy does seem to elicit a dog's innate love of play biting, tugging, shaking or exploring the unexpected from this fun source.  Pouncing on the toy in different ways may or may not make it squeak.  Shaking it may make it squeak a little differently each time. It can be a very inexpensive way of keeping your pet amused, interacting with your pet, or finding a fun substitute for keeping your pet busy while you take care of life instead of feeding your pet treats or crating your pet.

Our top picks from the many squeaker pet toys you can find are the DOG PACIFIER and the VINYL SQUEAKER PET BALL.  We think the pacifier appeals to a puppies sucking instinct especially when they're quite young and the squeaker ball...well, it's like a chew toy, fetch pet toy and a squeaker pet toy all in one AND it need not break your bank.  We would love to hear your experience with these great toys.  We suspect you'll find that your pet has the same reaction and delight we have experienced.

There’s More to Walking Your Dog Than Exercise.

Several friends may have boxers that are energetic and desirous of activity and your boxer may be the laziest couch potato on earth.  When you adopt a new dog, you adopt the breed and the individual dog. Any individual dog may not respond the way you see your friends' dogs or dogs on tv. Walking the dog may just seem like walking-with-the-dog, but it has many dimensions and your pet may need extra training.
